Almost there

as i continue to work on my project, i think i finally have what i want. i am going to use two pictures, one to start with and a different to end with. i think the idea that worked best for me was have a picture looking up a flight of stairs, and then zoom out to reveal that first of all it is a picture, and that the picture is actually at the bottom of a staircase. then the camera pans to the right, and we are looking up the staircase that was in the picture. we zoom in and zoom into a picture of the staircase that was going down. i like this idea because it messes with the sense of where we actually are.

weekend work

i have been working on my project, i just keep forgetting to do post about my process. i have been working with the picture thing. i think i like that idea better than just zooming in on an obscure object and then zooming out because by using a picture i can better show the ability of the camera to trick the viewer. i have been trying out different pictures and different locations, and i am currently trying to decide which combination i like the best.

10/22/07

I really enjoyed todays screenings. Much like last weeks I found them more accessible to me because they were about the filmmaker doing what he wanted. I thought it was funny that he wasn't even sure what the purpose of the projects he had to do were, and that he just did what he wanted. It was also refreshing to hear that, because thinking about the things I have to do for classes, its easy to forget to do what I want for projects, and end up losing my personality in projects.

As far as the project goes for this class, I played around with the zoom for a little bit this weekend and now I just want to find locations that will be able to reveal a lot when zoomed out. One idea that I had was to be zoomed in on a picture of something, like two people playing catch, and then to zoom out to reveal that that picture is actually happening right now.

Crazy Videos

I really liked the videos we viewed on Monday. Like I said in class it was so much easier for me to relate to these films because it seemed like it was just the people having fun. A lot of the other films we have screened for me it just seems like they are trying to hard. I am pretty biased because I want to do Hollywood cinema and I am not a big fan of experimental film at all, but I am getting better at viewing it and actually am starting to enjoy some of it. I hope i can only like them more. As far as my project, this weekend I am going to start playing around to see whats working and hopefully get a better idea on what I am going to do. I will make sure to post to let you know how its going.

10/10/07

Today we had discussion, and talked about the film "Rape." For me the film started out pretty funny, but as it went on I got uncomfortable and it was very creepy. I think one of the creepiest parts was that she didn't speak English and she obviously was helpless. I didn't know she was illegally in London but it made sense because she really didn't try to call for help, and that was because she was unable to actually do so. Overall for some reason I was able to stay interested in this film more than most of the others we have viewed. I think it has to do with following someone and that something actually happened.

Thinking about my film project, I'm still not quite sure what idea I am going to go with. I am going to keep thinking about it and hopefully one sticks out to me.

Proposal

I just got done writing my proposal and I am going to post it on here to see if anyone had some tips for me or ideas.
I have two ideas for my project and I’m not sure which one to choose yet so I am going to talk about both and hope for some guidance on which one better works. My first idea is to make a film about film time. I thought I could film a sunrise, and then play it backwards to make it look like a sunset. I think this is an interesting idea because it tricks the viewer’s sense of what’s happening and when did this happen. I’m not sure yet if I would play it in reverse and then forwards again, but I think I would probably play with it in editing and find what works best.
My second idea was to make a film about film space. I got this idea from Wavelength because instead of zooming into a picture, I would start zoomed in on a picture or object, causing the viewer to think they knew what they were looking at, and then zoom out to reveal that what was originally being looked at was actually an insignificant part of the screen space and almost not noticeable when the entire space is being shown. Again I would play with it in editing to see what speed works the best.
